Some of the things covered by home insurance are obvious, while others, not so much. For example, does home insurance cover exterior painting? In today’s blog, we provide an answer.
Does Home Insurance Cover Exterior Painting?
Exterior painting is one of the most visible aspects of your home, so it makes sense to wonder if this is covered by your home insurance. In general, homeowners insurance covers exterior painting only when the damage results from a risk covered by your policy.
Here it’s worth noting that there are two types of insurance policies: named perils and all risk.
Named perils insurance protects your home only against the risks that are listed in your policy. All risk policies, on the other hand, cover all risks except for those specifically excluded by the wording of your policy.
However, remember that these are only general guidelines. Every policy is different, so read your policy or contact your insurance agent for a more detailed answer.
What Does Home Insurance Cover?
Now that we are talking about the things that are covered (or not) by home insurance, here’s a quick guide to the protection you get with a standard policy:
- Home Structure Coverage. Helps pay to repair or replace your home if it’s damaged by a covered incident. Some of these incidents typically include fire, smoke, hurricanes, and hail.
- Personal Belongings Coverage. This coverage kicks in when personal belongings such as furniture or clothes are damaged in an incident covered by your policy, such as fire or theft.
- Liability coverage. Helps pay the legal costs if you or a member of your family (including pets!) causes damage to someone else.
- Additional living expenses (or ALE). This part of your home insurance policy covers the cost of living elsewhere if your house is damaged by a risk listed in your policy.
As you can see, you get a lot of protection when you purchase a policy for your home. However, there are some incidents typically not covered by home insurance.
For example, even if you already have homeowners insurance, you will need additional coverage if you want protection against earthquakes, floods, or water backup damage.
