Hit-and-runs are one of the risks drivers face once they hit the road. But does collision insurance cover this type of incident? If so, what does it cover, exactly? Keep reading to find out.
Does Collision Insurance Cover a Hit-and-Run?
Yes, typically collision insurance helps pay to repair or replace your car up to the limits listed in your policy if you are in a hit-and-run, that is, an incident where you are hit by another driver who then flees the scene.
Other coverages that may be useful when you’re the victim of a hit-and-run are:
- Collision Deductible Waiver (CDW). Removes the requirement that you pay your deductible if you’re hit by an uninsured driver.
- Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD). Pays for the damages caused to your car in an accident with an uninsured driver who is at fault. (You may not need it if you have collision coverage.)
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UMC/UIM). Covers you when you are hit by a driver who is uninsured or doesn’t have enough liability insurance to pay for your medical bills and other types of damage.
It’s important to note that both CDW and UMPD require you to be able to identify the car or driver that hit you.

Collision Insurance: What You Need To Keep in Mind
While collision insurance is useful in situations like hit-and-runs, this coverage is NOT required by law in California.
If you carry only California’s mandatory minimum of auto insurance, we strongly encourage you to consider buying collision coverage and/or some of the additional coverages listed in the previous section to better protect your and your family.
