We get it: home insurance is full of ins and outs. For example, people often wonder if home insurance covers mold. And what about water damage? In this blog post, we offer a clear outline of what is (and isn’t covered) by your homeowners insurance.
What Is Covered by Your Homeowners Insurance
Your typical homeowners insurance offers four types of protection: for the structure of your home, for your personal belongings, liability coverage, and additional living expenses. Let’s unpack what this all means.
Coverage for the structure of your home. Helps pay to repair or replace your home if it’s damaged by an incident listed in your policy. Some examples of risks covered by most policies include fire, smoke, hurricanes, and hail.
- Coverage for your personal belongings. This coverage kicks in when personal belongings such as furniture or clothes are damaged in an incident covered by your policy, such as fire or theft.
- Liability coverage. Helps pay the legal costs if you or a member of your family (including pets!) causes damage to someone else.
- Additional living expenses. Also known as ALE, this part of your policy covers the cost of living elsewhere if your house is damaged by a risk listed in your policy.
What Is NOT Covered by Your Homeowners Insurance
Most homeowners insurance policies don’t cover damage that results from large-scale disasters, such as earthquakes, and normal wear and tear.
Some examples of large-scale events not covered by homeowners insurance include:
● Earthquakes
● Floods
● Acts of war
● Nuclear accidents
The following incidents are not covered by your homeowners insurance because they are considered to be the result of normal wear and tear:
● Mold
● Infestations (including termites)
● Water damage
● Sewer backup
In some cases, your insurance can offer coverage if the damage is caused by a risk listed in your policy. For example, if you have flood insurance, then your policy may cover mold damage as long as it was caused by a flood.
Remember that you can get additional coverage against large-scale events or normal wear and tear. For example, at RF1 Insurance, in addition to homeowners policies, we also offer earthquake insurance and water backup insurance. Contact us and get protected today!
